The dtb-instilla is a drug delivery system that consists of a single-use disposable device that dispenses a precise dose of the medication directly into the bladder.
We helped UroPharma design and develop a solution which has now been patented. The device, coupled with drugs already licensed for bladder treatments and new drugs, directly targets the urinary bladder rather than expose the entire body to the medications.
The brief was to create a single-use needle that could be made safe after administration and prevent re-use.
While looking for a solution we had to ensure that the product could be used with standard luer-lock syringes and needles, unit cost was also critical.
We drew on our experience of making mass-produced consumer products to develop a solution which could be easily manufactured and consisted of only 3 plastic components. Utilising our in-house 3D printing capabilities also enabled us to develop the product in a short timescale. The nature of the final design solution was modular in nature, enabling several iterations of the product to be produced.
The resulting designs were subsequently patented giving the client a valuable asset.
